Punk this…
Critics are punks…

…and not in the good Joey Ramone, Mike Watt, Henry Rollins sort of way. Critics are whiney, cynical, ill-tempered beasts who couldn't draw a straight line with a ruler but will prattle on with the slightest encouragement about the all the shortfalls that can be found in VanGogh's Starry Nights. In short, being a critic is the easiest thing in the world. Being a GOOD critic, on the other hand… well that, my friends, is something entirely different indeed.

Ebert, Maltin, Turan… household names for most of us who have an interest in film. Lesser known but truly inspiring critics include Filmthreat's Chris Gore and Ron Wells, Mr. Cranky and many others on the internet, in local papers and quite possibly around the water cooler at work. Unhindered by common convention, etiquette, studio pressure or censorship, these are the people to whom one can turn for honest, poignant, and often helpful insight to the film industry and what movies actually deserve your time and effort.
